President Barack Obama is in Hiroshima, Japan Friday, the first sitting president to visit the site of the first wartime use of an atomic weapon. Speaking at the city's Peace Memorial Park, Obama encouraged listeners find the “force ourselves to imagine the moment the bomb fell,” and to listen to the “silent cry” of those who were lost in the explosion.
Getty Images photographer Jean Chung retraced locations and topics of archival photos by Japan’s Asahi Shimbun newspaper to showcase how the city has rebuilt itself and moved on more than 70 years after the attack, while still remembering its singular place in history.
The Associated Press contributed reporting.
